Life as an Artist Mother
It has been very interesting to see my daughter, Zora, develop an interest in pretty much all I do. She has made at least one thing with me amongst all the different mediums that I like to work with. From dreamcatcher, leather bag, knitted scarf or blanket to bracelets and necklaces,…
My approche with Zora has always been to let her discover a craft and request to make something with her hands. I have never really asked her to make anything specifically. I think I knew that “forcing” or asking her to make something specific could be a recipe for disaster. I took for face value the cliche of a parent teaching their trade to a child. When she was young I let my fellow knitting friends teach Zora. Pretty soon I could be creating something out of leather or beading a necklace and Zora would sit right alongside me and make something herself.
I feel fortunate that juggling my own business while raising a child never seemed to be in conflict. Making something with Zora was like playing with your child. Maybe just more quiet and individual than some games but it seems to be working for both of us.
It has been an interesting journey to run my business , which mostly has ment: create, create, create, participate in local markets, retail in three local shops - Makerfolk, Wolverine Farm Publick House & the Be Free Healing Center - and sell online.
