Handy Human

Art

Why do I love to change it up and do so many different things?

I am not sure. But one thing is certain: I am so grateful to have learnt the skills I know from my parents and teachers along my path. And for everything I am still learning every day from all the wise humans I encounter daily, the ones I know and keep going back to and the trials and errors I make.

It feels so good to pick up a couple of tools, i.e. a skill saw and a sander to make shelvings for my sewing studio. Custom made so they fit perfectly in the closet where I would like to organize some of my fabric.

The shelving unit is not fancy and has little flaws but it will serve a good purpose and be affordable. And, that little tingly feeling of having made something with your own hands - in my case especially something I don’t do every day that requires different tools and skills since “using my hands” is not a rarity for me ;)

If there is a message I would like to send here, it is to encourage your children, friends and people around you to learn new skills, to make something out of material you have around the house. Why not teach them to use tools, in a safe manner. That is how I learnt some of the carpenter skills I have. Brian and I have always let Zora use tools - sometimes sharp like exacto knives,… early on with safe and guided parental supervision. She seems to have developed those skills over the years and you can see how gratifying it is for her to cut by herself. You can see the feeling of empowerment in her eyes and body language.

Could it open up a part of our brain that is spacecial, possibly mathematical, even at a basic level?

In doing so let’s be gentle with ourselves or the people we teach to. Mistakes are part of the process and make us better. There is no shame in making mistakes. As I have mentioned before in the fiber arts world, mistakes can turn into amazing creations. I am sure that extends to all worlds. I have experienced this in cooking also.

Let’s keep learning and embrace imperfection. On this note I am planning on learning how to make pottery soon, with my friend and Piccola Perla sidekick Donna.

Peace!
